BOTANICAL NAME: Trithrinax campestris
COMMON NAME: Blue Needle palm or Spiny Fiber palm
COUNTRY of ORIGIN: Argentina & Uruguay
COLD HARDINESS: Reportedly hardy to about 13 degrees. As with most of the palms we grow, this one should be kept as dry as possible during the winter months.
If given proper care when young, this palm should be able to be established in most zone 8 climates.
SIZE and CHARACTERISTICS: A very slow growing palm to about 20 feet @ maturity. Let's hope the Grandkids are into Cold Hardy Palms too...
T.C. has a palmate leaf with incredibly stiff, bluish-gray segments of about 1' long and 2" wide. The Blue Needle would most prefer to be planted in an area of Full Sun
This palm will grow in a variety of soils and there is no reason it shouldn't be tried by anyone in Zone 8 or above who can get their hands on one. This is a rather rare palm in cultivation and it is available in limited numbers.
