BOTANICAL NAME: Agave montana

COMMON NAME: Hardy Century plant

COUNTRY of ORIGIN: Mexico, northeastern territories

COLD HARDINESS: Should be good to about 5 degrees, probably a little colder once it's been in the ground for a few years and is well established. Plant in well drained soil and we'll call it a zone 7b plant.

SIZE and CHARACTERISTICS: Ok, to start with... this is not a desert plant. It grows on very high elevations in the mountains of old Mexico. In habitat, this Agave sees regular snow, ice and rain during the winter. It should do quite well in the southeastern part of the United States.
A.M. forms a tight solitary rosette of glaucous blue/green leaves that are lined with sharks teeth and have a spine on the end of them. Unlike many Agaves, this variety does not send up 'pups' or 'runners' around the mother plant.
This particular plant grows very slowly at first. Our one quart plants are about as big around as a silver dollar and are two years old. They seem to be picking up the pace a little now that their root systems are becoming more mature.
One of these guys should get to about 4 or 5 feet across and over 3 feet tall in many years time.  One thing is for sure though, if you never plant one, you'll never have one...they are the coolest of plants that will reward the patient gardener in time.
Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade.
